Keynote Speakers

ETD2005 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Stevan Harnad
Steven Harnad
     

Formerly an undergraduate at McGill University and graduate at Princeton University, Hungarian born, Stevan Harnad is currently the Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Science at University of Quebec/Montreal and researches categorisation, communication and cognition.
Stevan is the founder and editor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (Cambridge University Press), Psycoloquy (American Psychological Association) and the CogPrints Electronic Preprint Archive in the Cognitive Sciences.
And he is Past President of the Society for Philosopy and Psychology, and author and contributor to over 150 publications.

     
Hai Jin
Hai Jin
     

Hai Jin is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China. He received his Ph.D. in computer engineering from HUST in 1994. In 1996, he was awarded German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) fellowship for visiting the Technical University of Chemnitz in Germany. He worked for the University of Hong Kong between 1998 and 2000 and participated in the HKU Cluster project. He worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California between 1999 and 2000. He is the chief scientist of the largest grid computing project, ChinaGrid, in China.
Dr. Jin is a member of IEEE and ACM. He is the associated editor of International Journal of Computer and Applications, International Journal of Grid and Utility Computing, International Journal of Web and Grid Services, Journal of Computer Science and Technology. He is IASTED technical committee member on Parallel & Distributed Computing and Systems. He is the steering committee member of IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGrid), and served as program vice-chair of the CCGrid'01, PDCAT'03, NPC'04 EUC'05, and e-Science'05, program chair of GCC'04 and NPC'05. He served as conference chairs for International Workshop on Internet Computing and E-Commerce from 2001 to 2003. He also served as program committee for more than 70 international conferences/workshops. He has co-authored four books and published over 150 research papers. His research interests include cluster computing and grid computing, peer-to-peer computing, network storage, network security, and high assurance computing.

     
Alex Byrne
Alex Byrne
     

Dr Alex Byrne chairs the ADT Policy Reference Group and is the President-elect 2003-2007 of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).
He chaired IFLA's Committee on Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression 1997-2003. And led the development of IFLA statements and declarations, including the IFLA Internet Manifesto, the Glasgow Declaration on Libraries, Information Services and Intellectual Freedom and the IFLA Statement on Open Access to Scholarly Literature and Research Documentation.
Alex is the University Librarian and a Deputy Chair of the Academic Board at the University of Technology, Sydney where he also chairs the Emerging Fields Advisory Committee which scopes potential disciplinary areas for the University. UTS Library is a participant in the ADT Program and has also launched an electronic press, UTSePress.

     
Dr. Xiaolin Zhang
Xiaolin Zhang
     

Dr. Zhang came to the library and information service field with a Physics educational background when he graduated from Physics Department, Sichuan University, China in 1982, and then went to the School of Library Services, Columbia University, USA for his Mater of Science study from 1982-1984 and his Doctor of Library Science from 1988-1992. He had worked as a LIS educator, serving as a professor and the Chair of the Information Management Department of Sichuan University of China since 1984-2001.

In 2001, Dr. Zhang went to work at the Library of Chinese Academy of Sciences (LCAS), the largest special library in China and functioning as the National Library of Sciences in the National Science and Technology Libraries system of China. He was first the Executive Director of Chinese Science Digital Library (CSDL) and now the Director. He became the Executive Director of LCAS in 2003 and then Director in 2004.

Dr. Zhang has been heavily involved in the developments of digital libraries and scientific information infrastructure in China. He is the Project Leader of Chinese Digital Library Standards Development Project funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Head of the Implementation Plan Design Group of the National Scientific Information Platform, and Member of the Expert Group for Scientific Information Infrastructure Development in National Long Term Planning for Scientific Development. He serves as a Standing Member in the Governing Boards of both China Society for Library Science (CSLS) and Chinese Society for Information Science (CSIS).

Dr. Zhang’s research interests are digital library systems, knowledge-based information systems embedded in e-science and e-learning environments, metadata, knowledge organization systems, and knowledge management. His recent presentations include: Building Libraries into Digital Research Space (3 rd Sino-US Library Forum, 2005), An Ontological Service Layer for Digital Libraries (Keynote speech at ICADL 2004), Driving Digital Libraries by Metadata Development (Keynote speech at DCMI 2004). He has published 5 books and over 80 professional articles.
